A Doe and Her Fawn
Original oil on canvas,
22 x 28 1/2
Signed and Dated Lower Right 1870
Price available upon request

For the first time in 50 years this piece is on the market. Tait (1819-1905) spent a considerable amount of time in the Adirondack Mountains, becoming a proficient marksman and woodsman, and he used this rugged setting as background for much of his art.

Framed:

Tait's style combined misty, atmospheric landscape settings with detailed renderings. Currier and Ives reproduced much of his work, making him one of the most popular artists of the period from 1850 to 1860. During this prolific period for Tait, his paintings were accepted as definitive views of life on the frontier and he thereby acquired a reputation as a "frontier" artist, painting scenes of hunters and wildlife. Tait's works can be seen in the book Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait - Artist in the Adirondacks, An Account of His Career by Warder H. Cadbury, and particularly see page 213 where "A Doe and Her Fawn" is shown.
