This early 20th century painting by Osthaus is a magnificent example of how he was able to direct the viewer’s eye to the two male grouse without revealing the presence of a female grouse close by. It takes several moments of reflection to then notice the female grouse in the lower portion of the painting. The painting was restored in 1991 by Olin Conservation, Inc. of Great Falls, Virginia. There was some deterioration in the secondary supporting canvas which required removing a small portion of the original canvas mechanically. The frame is the original hand-made oak frame, which is in tact and truely enhances this piece.
